Saturday June 7

Paper Mosaics with Nancy Zboch
10AM -1PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave. $45

Here is an opportunity to play with a myriad of beautiful Japanese papers including an extensive array of washi. Using a shikishi board as a base you will learn three different mosaic design techniques that when combined celebrate paper fibres, patterns and color.

The first technique is based on nature - inspired biomimicry - it challenges you to let go of controlling the creative process. The second incorporates scale variation and the third focuses on manipulation of surface via mixed media.

The finished shikishi and washi panels present a lyrical conversation between paper qualities and application techniques.  Please bring some bits of "play materials"  that appeal  to you: a button, branch, wire, mesh beads etc. if you feel so inclined.

Nancy Zboch is a visual artist who works with glass, paper, metal and paint on wood to create assemblages. She introduced paper mosaics recently to her teaching repertoire to the delight of a very large class here at the JPP.

Space is limited for this workshop. To register, please phone The Japanese Paper Place at 416-538-9669 with name, contact information, and payment information (VISA or MasterCard).

Carving Stamps and Printing with Gold on Washi with Barbara Bunke (Sweden)
2PM - 5PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave. $50.

Participants should come with a simple graphic shape in mind that can be drawn onto a 2 x 2" eraser and carved out. Taking tips from Barbara's many years of graphic designing for her company Ljunggrens in Stockholm, Sweden, you will create a small printed work using either the repetition of your own stamp or a combination of your own and one that you borrow from a workshop mate.

Applying the stamps with gold and some colour to beautiful gampi and kozo washi, and using Barbara's treasure trove of tricks with a variety of markers, pads, powders and tools, you will discover how little it takes when you use beautiful washi to create elegant effects. You'll produce a number of printed designs to use in cards or giftwrap or as book covers once you get the techniques down pat.

Barbara Bunke lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden where she owns Ljunggrens Pappershandel, one of the most admired paper stores in Europe. There she offers paper products from all over the world as well as her own creations. Barbara creates cards for UNICEF,  one of which became the best-selling card in their history . She is currently working on her third book on bookbinding and paper crafts.

Don't miss Barbara's table at the Washi Bazaar where you can see and buy her washi-inspired wares!

Traditional Japanese Stab-Sewn Bookbinding with Japanese Tools with Maki Yamashita (Japan)
10AM - 1PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave.  $55.

With emphasis on the use of traditional Japanese bookbinding tools, with Maki in this workshop you will carefully complete a 4-hole stab-sewn book. This is a classic form in Japan, with folded foredges and a soft washi cover, a notebook that will hold together extremely well with repeated use.

Konnyaku, the Washi-Transforming Starch with JPP staff
2PM -5PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave. $30.

This is a hands-on mushing, crinkling and squeezing type of workshop using a material that will give strength and form to paper. Best known in Japan as a food, konnyaku - or Devil's Tongue Root starch - has also been used for centuries to make kamiko (paper clothing). Brushed on to the paper, the starch paste is worked into the sheet with your hands, the crumpling process giving the paper drape, and the starch adding strength and abrasion resistance. Papers treated with konnyaku can be used to make momigami for use in book covers and other projects where tough paper is needed. Papers coated with konnyaku are also suitable for stitching and dyeing.

Space is limited for this workshop. To register, please phone The Japanese Paper Place at 416-538-9669 with name, contact information, and payment information (VISA or MasterCard).

When you see her magnificent papercuts at David Kaye Gallery at the Summit, you’ll understand why we asked Barbara to share a few techniques with visitors in June. Using a variety of dyed kozo washi, you’ll design and cut several pieces that could be the start of a brand new creative path. Barbara’s irrepressible sense of whimsy, her creative genius in many genres from rug design to book illustration and her experience as an inspiring teacher mean if you have ever thought about papercutting using great paper, this is the time to begin.

Pochoir (Printmaking with Stencils) with Brian Kelley,
10AM - 1PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave.  $45.

Pochoir is a stencil printing technique for making colour images on paper. It combines qualities from silk screen, watercolour and woodcut printing all in one technique that doesn’t use rollers, presses or screens. The result can look surprisingly like any of the 3 mediums that it borrows from – without the fuss.

Bring a simple motif such as a fruit, leaf or shape and learn from a master whose fine interpretations of the land continue to run the gamut of printmaking, painting, drawing, and sculpture techniques. See Brian’s masterful work at Lennox Contemporary Gallery while you’re here.

Drawing and Painting on Washi with Susan Wood
10AM - 12PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave.  $40.

Are you a practising artist who draws or paints on western paper, but who approaches Japanese paper with fear and trembling? Fear not! Haligonian (for our non-Canadian friends, this is a person from Halifax) Susan Wood is here to help. She’ll show you how to choose appropriate papers, adhere various weights of washi to each other and how to prepare some surfaces for various painting and drawing mediums. This is a rare chance to learn from a devoted and talented washi user. Drawing and painting experience a definite asset for this class.

Susan teaches art at NSCAD and you can see some of her layered drawn and painted works with washi at the “New Work by Washi Veterans” at The Japanese Paper Place during the Summit.

Saturday June 14

Paper Dyeing with Natural Dyes with Tatiana Ginsberg
10AM - 5PM at Contemporary Textile Studio Co-op, 401 Richmond St. West, Studio 109. $100.

For most of us, the words "Japanese paper" conjure images of beautiful, off-white kozo sheets, yet the Japanese also have a tradition of richly colored papers. Many of the oldest extant papers in Japan are dyed – the earliest surviving examples of Japanese calligraphy date from 614-15 on kozo paper dyed yellow with kihada bark – and colored papers continued to be used for activities such as writing love letters, poems and in conducting affairs of state.

While the principles of preparing natural dyes for use on washi are the same as for fabric, the handling of the paper is necessarily different: Tatiana, who spent two years researching traditional washi dyeing techniques in Japan, will guide you through the steps.

In the morning there will be a general discussion of how to extract dyes from plants and how mordants work, followed by preparation of 3 different dyes and two mordants. In the afternoon, two dyeing methods – tsukezome (dip dyeing) and hakezome (brush dyeing) – will be covered, as well as time to play with simple resists such as shibori and orizome.

We are grateful that Tatiana is taking this time from her active art and teaching career in Santa Barbara CA to come to the Summit and pass on her valuable experience in Japan.

Traditional Bookbinding: East meets West with Reg Beatty
10AM -1PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave.  $55.

This class is a meditation on Eastern and Western sensibilities regarding the book. It examines the inherent properties of washi through the lens of Western bookbinding history: subtle pliancy vs. structural control. Washi will be folded into "pouched signatures", sewn on vellum tapes and laced into a three part covering to produce an exciting contemporary hybrid. Some bookbinding experience required to complete the project.

Space is limited for this workshop. To register, please phone The Japanese Paper Place at 416-538-9669 with name, contact information, and payment information (VISA or MasterCard).

Wood and Washi: Sustainability in a Box with Reg Beatty
2PM - 5PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave.  $55.

This class pairs up the tactile and visual harmonies of two absolutely "green" materials: wood and washi. Through this small box you’ll explore washi's contrasting textures and colours and top it off with a sliding wooden lid.

Reg Beatty has been teaching bookbinding and loving washi for aeons at The Japanese Paper Place. Students have been unanimous in their praise for him as an inspiring and gifted teacher, both technically and aesthetically.

Space is limited for this workshop. To register, please phone The Japanese Paper Place at 416-538-9669 with name, contact information, and payment information (VISA or MasterCard).

Sunday June 15

Shodo with Noriko Maeda
10AM - 1PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave.  $40.

Shodo, or Japanese brush calligraphy, is a discipline that takes years of practice to develop the professional skills of a talent like Noriko-san. In this taste of sumi ink, brush and washi, you'll get a whiff of the meditative and visual possibilities that exist in this combination of ancient materials if you set your mind, heart and hand to it. You’ll write characters that won’t tax you too much today, and after you practise, a little, you’ll get a piece of serious washi to try your hand at.

Space is limited for this workshop. To register, please phone The Japanese Paper Place at 416-538-9669 with name, contact information, and payment information (VISA or MasterCard).

Western Applications of Eastern Techniques in Book and Paper Conservation with Betsy Palmer Eldridge
3PM - 5PM at The Japanese Paper Place, 77 Brock Ave.  $35.

This final presentation, more lecture and demonstration than workshop, will be taught by Toronto’s gift to the conservation world. Betsy’s extensive career as a bookbinder, paper conservator and teacher of many fledgling paper conservators will make this a valuable session for both conservators and artists who work with paper.

In recent years a number of Japanese bench techniques have been successfully adapted - and enthusiastically adopted - by western bookbinders working in book and paper conservation. Betsy will discuss and demonstrate some that she has found to be particularly useful that might be of interest to anyone working in the paper arts.
